Student Organizations

Students in the Department of Health Systems Administration are encouraged to join and engage in professional organizations related to the health care field, at both a local and national level. Student organizations sponsored by the department are listed below and are a few of the many options on campus available to students.

Healthcare Executives of Georgetown University

Healthcare Executives of Georgetown University (HEGU) is an organization designed to facilitate the development of personal and professional skills necessary for effective leadership in the field of health care. All students at Georgetown University are welcome to join.

Members are provided with opportunities to network with professionals from local, regional, and national institutions. Ongoing activities include guest speakers, seminars, and service projects, which enhance students’ professional growth and serve to strengthen valuable bonds with colleagues at Georgetown. Visit the HEGU site for more information.

IHI Open School

The purpose of the Georgetown University Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School is to create a community of future health care professionals focused on learning and applying the principles, methods and tools of quality improvement, process improvement and patient safety.

The Open School Chapter is made up of hospital administrators, faculty, medical students, nursing students, pharmacy students, and health systems administration students – all dedicated to improving health care delivery through multidisciplinary learning, teamwork and leadership. By working collectively with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, the Open School Chapter turns education into action through project design and implementation.

The Open School Chapter convenes monthly to provide students and faculty the necessary tools and skills to engender real change in health care delivery by reducing patient harm and improving processes. Meetings include discussions of case studies and current topics related to quality improvement and patient safety as well as information on how to run FOCUS-PDSA cycles and effective group meetings. More information is available at the IHI Open School site.
