Honors and Awards

Awards

Each year at the Tropaia and Commencement Ceremony, the School of Nursing & Health Studies recognizes outstanding achievement by members of the graduating class through awards and citations.  These are listed in the back of the Georgetown University Undergraduate Bulletin.  In addition to the special awards, seniors graduating cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude are recognized.

Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing

Sigma Theta Tau is dedicated to the task of promoting high professional standards and emphasizing the importance of scientific research and creative work in all areas of nursing.  It recognizes the achievement of scholarship of superior quality and the development of leadership qualities.  Membership is an honor and carries with it many unique benefits as well as responsibilities.  Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies sponsors the Tau chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.

Selection of candidates for invitation to membership is based on a review of the candidate's application, using the following criteria:

1) Superior scholastic achievement as evidenced by: an overall grade point average of 3.0 or above and a grade point average of 3.0 or above in nursing courses for junior and senior students; an overall grade point average of 3.5 or above and a grade point average of 3.5 or above in nursing for sophomore students. (In the case of transfer students, the grade point average is based on the grades of at least one summer session and one semester.)

2) Completion of at least one half of the academic program.

3) Evidence of participation in activities which reflect professional leadership potential.

Application materials may be obtained from the Eligibility Committee chairperson.  The Eligibility Committee must receive applications and references no later than February 1st.

Health Studies Scholars

In order to recognize excellence in the intellectual life among Health Studies Majors, students may be selected as Health Studies Scholars.  15% of the class may be inducted as scholars.  Senior students must be in good academic standing, have no less than a 3.0 GPA and be in the top 35% of the Health Studies majors at the end of the first semester senior year.  Junior candidates may be selected early if they hold a 3.5 GPA at the end of the first semester junior year.  Scholars are selected each year following an all-school notice requesting applications.
