Honors and Awards
Awards
Each year at the Tropaia and Commencement Ceremony,
the School of Nursing & Health Studies recognizes outstanding achievement
by members of the graduating class through awards and citations. These
are listed in the back of the Georgetown University Undergraduate
Bulletin. In addition to the special awards, seniors
graduating cum
laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude are
recognized.
Sigma
Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing
Sigma Theta Tau is dedicated to the task of promoting
high professional standards and emphasizing the importance of scientific
research
and creative work in all areas of nursing. It recognizes the achievement
of scholarship of superior quality and the development of leadership
qualities. Membership is an honor and carries with it many
unique benefits as well as responsibilities. Georgetown University
School of Nursing & Health Studies sponsors the Tau chapter
of Sigma Theta Tau.
Selection of candidates for invitation to membership is based on
a review of the candidate's application, using the following
criteria:
1) Superior scholastic achievement as evidenced by: an overall
grade point average of 3.0 or above and a grade point average of
3.0 or above in nursing courses for junior and senior students; an
overall grade point average of 3.5 or above and a grade point average
of 3.5 or above in nursing for sophomore students. (In the
case of transfer students, the grade point average is based on
the grades of at least one summer session and one semester.)
2) Completion of at least one half of the academic program.
3) Evidence of participation in activities which reflect professional
leadership potential.
Application materials may be obtained from the Eligibility
Committee chairperson. The Eligibility Committee must receive
applications and references no later than February 1st.
Health Studies Scholars
In order to recognize excellence in the intellectual
life among Health Studies Majors, students may be selected as Health
Studies
Scholars. 15% of the class may be inducted as scholars. Senior
students must be in good academic standing, have no less than a 3.0
GPA and be in the top 35% of the Health Studies majors at the end
of the first semester senior year. Junior candidates may be
selected early if they hold a 3.5 GPA at the end of the first semester
junior year. Scholars are selected each year following an all-school
notice requesting applications.
