NHS's research portfolio consists of over 40 active projects, including several R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health. The following projects and initiatives highlight NHS's focus on research:

The Pathways to Success Program focuses on capturing the interest of high school students in science-based health careers. The program's Summer Biomedical Science Institute is a 3-week annual actiity to (1) enhance students' academic skills; (2) spark enthusiasm for health-related careers; and (3) create a network for student participants.

The Center on Health & Education is directed by internationally renowned child development experts Craig and Sharon Ramey. The center is an interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at reducing ethnic disparities in health outcomes, by identifying the biological, psychological, and social factors that determine health among ethnic groups.

Nurses for America (NFA), sponsored by AmeriCorp, recruits and trains nurses for placement in underserved areas of Alameda County, CA; East St. Louis, IL; St. Louis, MO, Loredo and San Antonio, TX, and the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area for a period of two years per recruitment.
