Margaret Herseth

Current Program: MS in Health Systems Administration
Previous Degrees: The George Washington University
Hometown: Reston, VA

How did you plan to use Georgetown as a springboard for your future plans?
Obviously, the reputation of Georgetown, specifically in the medical/health industry, is fabulous and should be an asset for my future. Before I started at Georgetown, I managed a pediatric practice. I look for my time at Georgetown to help me define not only the specific area of health administration that I wish to pursue, but also the type of organization of which I wish to be a part. The mentorship and practicum component of the program will be vital to defining my next professional step.

What is your favorite part about your program?
I really enjoy the interaction in my classes. The professors have created an environment where participation is encouraged and valued, and there is no “fear” of voicing an incorrect opinion or opposing perspective. The students in my program also contribute to this environment, finding value in differing opinions. The discussions force me to think harder and clearer – not just to create an opinion, but to also be able to support it.

How has the faculty contributed to your overall experience?
The most valuable contribution of the faculty is their real world experience. They are able to teach from a REAL perspective, not just a theoretical one alone. It makes a huge difference to have topics presented by people who have worked in the healthcare world and understand the challenges and rewards the industry has to offer.
