Dear NHS First-Year Parents:
Welcome to the Georgetown University community!
The summer can be an exciting and anxious time for parents sending
their children off to college. You may have questions about what
you and your student can expect during the first year at Georgetown.
In addition to the knowledgeable team at NHS, the NHS Parents Council
can help with questions about student life, campus events, move-in
issues, or even: “What is a Hoya?”* We have all learned
various lessons about life on the Hilltop and are happy to share
our insights with you. In the coming weeks, feel free to contact
the NHS Parents Council by emailing us at NHSParents@georgetown.edu.
By now, you should have received an invitation for the NHS Move-In
Day Welcome Reception on Saturday, August 23, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
in Copley Formal Lounge. Members of the NHS Parents Council
will be there to greet you. We encourage you to take a break
from hauling boxes to come enjoy refreshments and meet NHS families,
faculty, and Dean Bette Jacobs.
Also, mark your calendar for NHS Parents’ Weekend, October
17-19, 2008. During this fun-filled weekend you will visit your son
or daughter and their new friends, meet other parents, and attend
campus events. This is a great opportunity to experience Georgetown
life and learn more about the University. More details will be sent
closer to the date.
Throughout the year you will continue to receive
information about campus news, important dates, and events. In addition,
go to our parent community page on the NHS website, nhs.georgetown.edu,
to learn more about the NHS Parents Council and school activities.
Again, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions
or if you would like to know how to get involved with the parent
leadership of NHS.
We are looking forward to an exciting year!

* The official explanation holds that there was a baseball team at Georgetown called the "Stonewalls". It is suggested that a student, applying Greek and Latin, dubbed the team the hoia saxa-- hoia is the Greek neuter plural for "what" or "what a", while saxa is the Latin neuter plural for "rock". Substituting a "y" for an "i"; "hoya saxa" literally means "what rocks".
