Youth to Participate In Summer Enrichment
Program on Health Science
Washington, D.C.—Nearly 40 high school students will travel
to Georgetown University this summer to participate in the Pathways
to Success program—supported by founding sponsor The Goldman
Sachs Foundation.
Since 2002, Pathways to Success has developed community partnerships
in rural and under-served communities in America. The program engages
upcoming juniors and seniors in innovative science and health studies;
encourages them to attend college; and showcases careers in biomedical
science, health care, and science technology.
During the past five years, more than 90 students and adult mentors
from various rural communities have participated in this program.
This year’s program takes place from Monday, June 25, to Monday,
July 16. Students will attend from Colorado, Louisiana, and South
Dakota.
“Our program focuses on students who have limited access to
health, science, and technology education in their home communities,” said
Pathways Director Charles H. Evans Jr., M.D., Ph.D., professor and
chair of the Department of Human Science at the School of Nursing & Health
Studies (NHS), a part of Georgetown University Medical Center.
“Knowledge of these areas is more important than ever,” added
Evans. “These talented young men and women should have every
chance to compete in this area of our country’s job market.
Our main goal is to spark their interest in these fields and encourage
them to attend college.”
While at Georgetown, students have the opportunity to earn college
credit while taking classes from university faculty. They take courses
in the NHS Discovery Center—a modern and cutting-edge research
lab. They also work in the O’Neill Family Foundation Clinical
Simulation Center at NHS—a fully equipped clinical lab that
includes the Georgetown University Simulator, a realistic robotic
patient.
In addition, students participate in off-campus trips to locations
around the Washington metropolitan area, including Children’s
National Medical Center, the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins
University—another Goldman Sachs site, and the Smithsonian
Institution.
After the summer portion of the program, participants continue the
relationship with Georgetown through the online Biomedical Virtual
Laboratory.
“This program has meant a great deal to my future both as
a student and as a person,” one past participant said. “I
have learned so much more about who I am and what I can be by stepping
out of my community and into the big world.”
