On April 11, 2007, the Department of Health Systems Administration
at NHS hosted another event in the McAuley Lecture Series.
Duncan Neuhauser, Ph.D., the Charles Elton Blanchard, M.D. Professor
of Health Management and a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics
at Case Western Reserve University, keynoted on the topic of, “Quality
Improvement and Evidence Based Management.”
Neuhauser specializes in clinical decision analysis, health services
research, medical technology assessment, and continuous quality improvement.
He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy
of Sciences and has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles,
chapters, and books.
"His more than 250 journal articles reflect a very important
positioning in the world of quality of care," said Gary L. Filerman,
Ph.D., chair of the Department of Health Systems Administration,
in his introduction of Neuhauser.
At the event, Neuhauser covered three specific topics in quality
improvement, including being mindful of customers, being aware of
statistics and measurements of success, and understanding how health
care and other organizations might transform themselves.
"Quality improvement says we are getting better over time," said
Neuhauser. "...One of the neat things about quality improvement
is we're making these ideas so simple that anybody can use them."
The McAuley Lecture Series covers topics related to health and health
care. The series was made possible through a gift from Brian and
Jane McAuley—parents of Georgetown graduates Beth (C’98),
Mary (NHS’07), and Tricia (NHS’02).
Past speakers include Bruce E. Bradley, director of health care
strategy and public policy at General Motors Corporation; Sister
Mary Rose McGeady, then president & CEO of Covenant House; and
Jean-Pierre Sommadossi, president, CEO, and chairman of the board
of Idenix.
