Program Description

Georgetown University's Health Care Leadership Institute will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to strategically position both you and your organization in this dynamic health care environment.  Using business-oriented methodologies, you will strengthen your abilities as a decision-maker and a leader.  At Georgetown, we are concerned not only with the ideas and theories critical for administrative success, but also with the values and traditions that are imbedded in being a health care leader.  Here you will learn from university and industry experts, experience first hand the policy-making process, and develop a new network of colleagues from every part of the country.  Maintaining professional excellence is one of the most important challenges we face as health care managers and the Georgetown University Health Care Leadership Institute will afford you the opportunity to engage in thoughtful exchange of ideas, establish new contacts, and fine tune your existing skills to make you an even more effective health care leader.

The Curriculum

Individual sessions have been developed to provide participants with the most up to date perspectives on today's seminal issues - patient safety and quality improvement.

Creating a Culture of Quality

Although quality concerns in health care have been present for decades, the recent IOM Reports have awakened the health care system to the challenges of reducing the number of adverse events in hospitals. This session provides an overview of the landscape of patient safety. It will explore the business case for innovation in quality improvement and patient safety.

Implementing Unit and System Based Patient Safety Programs

This session explores quality improvement and patient safety from the perspective of the clinical unit. Strategies to identify vulnerabilities, improve communication, create learning systems and develop high performing teams will be addressed.

Patient Safety - Time for a System Redesign

This session will focus on the players in the safety movement, the forces driving safety, how safety and quality are inter-related, strategies for implementation of evidence-based practices, redesigning health care systems to improve safety, and lessons learned from top performers.

Health Information Technology: A Key to Reducing Errors

Recent reports by the Institute of Medicine have focused attention on the growing problem of medical errors in our hospitals. This session will explore how application of Health Information Technology can improve the safety, quality and cost-effectiveness of care.

The Role of Disclosure in Unanticipated Outcomes

This interactive session will address unanticipated medical outcomes both with and without error. Participants will learn techniques to discuss these outcomes with patients and their families, as well as the importance of full disclosure.

Strategic Marketing

This session will prepare participants with the skills necessary to translate marketplace data into information that directs strategy. It will cover environmental assessment, consumer satisfaction, and evaluating marketing outcomes. The session provides a practical discussion of using marketing tools for enhanced decision-making in the not-for-profit sector.

Labor and Employment Issues for Health Care Managers

This session focuses on the major issues in human resource management, labor-management relations, and employee relations in health care settings. Special emphasis will be given to unfair labor practices, grievance procedures, and special provisions for the health care industry of the Labor Management Relations Act.

Negotiation and Conflict Management

Participants will examine the role of power in negotiations, will learn interest-based negotiations, and will develop creative strategies for negotiating with multiple stakeholders.
