Students at Georgetown University voted Joan Riley as the 2007 Dorothy
Brown Award winner. Riley is an assistant professor of human science
and nursing at the School of Nursing & Health Studies.
Given during the Georgetown Day celebration on Friday, April 27,
the award is named for Dorothy Brown, a longtime faculty member and
former provost at Georgetown. Each year, it goes to a faculty member
who has made a significant impact on the students' undergraduate
experience.
"I know that Joan gives her heart and soul in the classroom," said
NHS Dean Bette Keltner at the event. "Truly, Joan Riley has
so much to offer for Georgetown."
"I am grateful and flattered by this award as it is a thrill
to be chosen by Georgetown students," said Riley.
At the award ceremony, Matthew Appenfeller (C'08), vice president
of the Georgetown University Student Association, presented Riley
with the award certificate. In his remarks, he noted one of his friend's
comments about Riley: "She has given herself to this university.
...Her door is always open."
Riley earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Georgetown.
She has taught on campus since 1977 and is also a family nurse practitioner
in the Student Health Center. Her teaching and scholarship focus
on health promotion.
