NHS Junior Earns Raines Fellowship
Allison
Boyd, a junior in the School of Nursing & Health Studies,
was recently awarded the Lisa Joy Raines Endowed Undergraduate Research
Fellowship.
As a fellow, Boyd, who is a major within the Department of Human
Science, will receive $5,000 to fund independent summer research.
Her project, she says, will look at genetic links among transmitted
drug-resistant mutations in HIV-1. The focus will be on the Washington,
D.C. area.
Currently, Boyd is part of research team at NHS that is studying
antiretroviral drug resistance in HIV/AIDS.
Along with other undergraduates, she has worked closely with Michael
Relf, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Nursing, and Charles Evans,
M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Human Science.
The Raines Fellowship, available to members of the Carroll Fellows
Initiative, is named for Lisa Joy Raines, a 1982 graduate of Georgetown
University Law Center who died on Sept. 11.
