NHS Introduces Pediatric Simulator

Pediatric SimulatorIn July, the School of Nursing & Health Studies introduced a brand new pediatric simulator to the school's O'Neill Family Foundation Clinical Simulation Center.

The wireless simulator--a Newborn HAL Mobile Team Trainer manufactured by Gaumard Scientific--mimics a variety of human functions, including lung sounds, heart sounds, blood pressure, and active motion. The robotic baby can replicate seizures and become cyanotic, or turn blue. In addition, it can be intubated and attached to hospital equipment.

"The new simulator exposes our students to a pediatric patient so that they can manage a critical event before they experience it in the real-life clinical arena," said Stephen Hurst, the NHS director of medical technologies.

The addition of the pediatric simulator builds upon the center's dynamic learning environment, which also includes GUS—an adult patient simulator, two simulated hospital bed units that hold a total of nine beds, and five simulated provider offices.
