Craig Ramey, Ph.D., and Sharon Ramey, Ph.D., directors of Georgetown
University Center on Health and Education at NHS, testified
Jan. 3 before the D.C. Council on expanding pre-kindergarten
(pre-K) programs.
The measure before the council would, according to Washington
Post coverage, extend pre-K programs to 2,000 more 3- and 4-year-olds
in the District.
"Early intervention can both prevent unnecessary delays
and disabilities and also considerably reduce the personal and
academic consequences of existing disabilities," said Sharon
Ramey. "All children can benefit from the proposed pre-K
legislation."
"As the District of Columbia contemplates a major commitment
to and investment in high quality pre-K programs, we strongly
recommend that you incorporate, from the beginning, supports
for teachers and teaching assistants, principals and center directors,
and parents, and that District of Columbia becomes a model for
how to provide truly appropriate, stimulating education and care
for all children and their families," said Craig Ramey.
