The Department of Health Systems Administration at NHS—under
the leadership of department chair Gary Filerman and master's
degree candidate Kenneth West (G'09)—hosted a two-day conference
to look at ethics and values in health services coursework.
The event, which took place in St. Mary's Hall from Jan. 17-18,
included faculty and leadership from Georgetown University, Saint
Louis University, University of Scranton, and Xavier University.
In addition, William L. Thomas, executive vice president for
medical affairs at MedStar Health, and Douglas P. Cropper, executive
vice president at Inova Health System, spoke.
To kick off the session, NHS Dean Bette Keltner offered welcome
remarks.
"The fact that things are changing [in the health care
industry] presents an opportunity for those of us who have truly
wanted to embed a philosophy in operations in a new way," said
Keltner.
"It is not terribly difficult to balance the books," she
said. "The challenge is can we do this and include health
care services for all people who need it. I am absolutely delighted
that you could join us. It's really a privilege to be able to
welcome you to Georgetown University."
