| Diane Downing and Jeanne Matthews |
Two public health nursing professors at Georgetown University School
of Nursing & Health Studies took on leadership roles at the
recent meeting of the American Public Health Association.
Diane Downing, MSN, was appointed chair of the association-wide
Action Board. The board connects various APHA sections, affiliates,
caucuses, and special interest groups to the association's ongoing
advocacy and legislative work. It also encourages members to speak
with a unified voice on health care issues in Washington and the
state capitals.
In addition, Jeanne Matthews, Ph.D., became chair of the APHA's
Public Health Nursing Section. She was also recently named chair
of the Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations. On
Sunday, Nov. 4, Matthews presented the keynote address at the council's
Learning Institute. Her talk covered, "Baccalaureate Education:
Foundation for Public Health Nursing Practice--A Call to Action."
Aside from their faculty appointments at Georgetown, Downing and
Matthews hold positions at the Arlington County (Va.) Public Health
Division. They share responsibilities as nurse manager and public
health program specialist.
