Jerry Price, chief operating officer of Sibley Memorial Hospital,
has been named to the faculty of the Department of Health Systems
Administration at Georgetown University.
“The appointment recognizes Jerry’s commitment to
professional education, his teaching expertise, and the role that
he has played in facilitating access to the talent of the management
group at Sibley,” said Department Chair Gary L. Filerman,
Ph.D.
For several years, Price has been participating in both the undergraduate
and nationally ranked graduate programs in health systems administration.
He teaches managerial leadership and internal organization for
quality of care—a hallmark of the Georgetown program.
Price also takes time to mentor master’s-level students
in the program. One of those students, Frederick N. Peal II, says
the relationship has contributed a great deal to his educational
experience.
“His willingness to share with me his wisdom and expertise
in the field of health systems administration during the course
of each semester proved to be invaluable insights that I could
never take lightly,” said Peal.
“My favorite episode was my lunch appointment in the cafeteria
at Sibley with Mr. Price,” Peal noted. “We were joined
by two physicians who began to discuss issues relating to hospital
administration.”
“I thought that was incredible teaching moment that could
not be taught in the classroom,” said Peal.
In addition to his own teaching and mentorship, Price has extended
the service of other Sibley executives to Georgetown’s program.
Since 2004, Queenie Plater, Sibley’s vice president for
human resources, has taught an undergraduate course entitled, “Human
Resources Management and Development.”
“Jerry introduced us to Queenie, who is one of the most
popular teachers in the program,” Filerman said. “Students
value the way that she brings in examples from the real world while
giving them a foundation in the principles of human resources.”
Like Price’s work with Peal, Filerman added, two other Sibley
executives act as mentors to graduate students. Barry Eisenberg,
vice president for senior services, mentors student Meghan Healy.
And Christine Stuppy, director of business development and strategic
planning, mentors Christopher Poe.
“Each student in the Georgetown graduate program is teamed
with an executive in the health system for their entire career
in the program,” said Filerman. “Mentors are carefully
selected as role models because of their demonstrated competence,
interest in students, and position.”
