HIV/AIDS Project Receives Supplemental Funding
A
federally funded Georgetown University project to build HIV/AIDS
nursing workforce capacity in Africa has recently received $300,000
in supplemental funding from the President's Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
The program, called "Nurses SOAR!," is housed in the
Department of Nursing at the School of Nursing & Health Studies.
Founded in 2006 with a $1.5 million grant from the Health Resources
and Services Administration, the initiative is providing HIV/AIDS
clinical mentoring, leadership development, palliative care training,
and loss and grief workshops for nurses.
R. Kevin Mallinson, Ph.D., serves as principal investigator on
the grant. He works together with Michael Relf, Ph.D., chair of
the Department of Nursing, and the project director Amanda Liddle,
Dr.P.H. Numerous junior and senior nursing students are engaged
in scholarly activities to learn about the complexities of providing
HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care services in sub-Saharan
Africa.
The new funding includes $250,000 for program activities in South
Africa and $50,000 toward projects in Lesotho. Nurses SOAR! will
expand its activities to nurses in Swaziland over the coming year.
