Welcome from the Department Chair, Health Systems Administration
Welcome
to the Web site of the Department of Health Systems Administration
at Georgetown University—located in Washington,
D.C. Your interest in health care leadership, management, and
policy comes at a critically important time in our nation’s
history.
Challenges abound. For example, the U.S. Census Bureau reports
that approximately 45.7 million people lacked health insurance
coverage in 2007. Some 10,000 people will turn 65 each day by
2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
And by 2017, health care spending is expected to hit $4.3 trillion,
notes the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Opportunities to help solve these pressing issues are alive
within our department. At the undergraduate level, we offer a
dynamic bachelor’s degree in Health Care Management & Policy
with many opportunities for hands-on learning, including at Georgetown
University Hospital.
At the graduate level, our master’s program in Health
Systems Administration is nationally ranked by U.S. News & World
Report and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation
Healthcare Management Education. During their course of study,
graduate students participate in an innovative practicum at organizations
such as Georgetown University Hospital, Booz Allen Hamilton,
the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the American
College of Cardiology.
Throughout both programs, students have the opportunity to learn
from a leading faculty. Our faculty members combine the latest
in evidence-based academic scholarship with real-world experience
to create a rich learning community. In addition, they pursue
diverse scholarly interests such as veterans health, health informatics,
health literacy, emergency preparedness, and long-term care financing.
I hope you will come to visit us soon. Please let us know if
we can assist you in any way.
Sincerely,
Patricia Cloonan, Ph.D., RN

Systems Administration
