Designing a Methodology to Assess the Impact and Value of International
Hospital Accreditation
Interest in accreditation
of hospitals outside of the United States is growing. Among the
reasons are; the globalization of health care sciences, medical "tourism", and international
business interest in quality of care for employees. Joint Commission
International, sponsor of the project, accredits almost 100 hospitals
and other services outside of the US. JCI has asked us to help
answer the question," what is the impact and value of being
accredited?" Filerman
Creating a National Database on Medical Group Practices
In collaboration with University of Minnesota and the Medical
Group Management Association, a team designed a national sample
database of medical group practices. The sample, or panel,
of practices will provide a stable source of information on
practice change. The first phase was to identity sources of
data, develop a classification system and to test the system.

through the University of Minnesota. Filerman
Challenging the Health Literacy Barrier
Health Literacy embraces all of the communications content, interactions
and media that define the relationship between the individual
and health services. Many people suffer as a result of low health
literacy on the part of the provider and system as well as the
consumer. With an educational grant from Pfizer, Inc. a two-year
initiative has been launched to move literacy into the mainstream
of nursing education. The goal is for all nurses to possess the
skills to improve the literacy of their patients, improve their
own skills and to make the issue a focus of nursing research
and education. Cloonan

Medical
Center, Washington,
DC. This interdisciplinary project trains health care administrators,
physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists,
and others to work collaboratively to address the total needs
of young patients and their families who are faced with caring
for children with severe disabilities. The
project consists of didactic sessions and field experiences
at local community sites. Horak
National Pharmacy Leadership Center
This year-long project was funded by the American Society
of Health System Pharmacists and the Foundation of ASHP, with
the collaboration of MedStar Health. The object was to design
a center that will respond to the management and leadership
development needs of hospital and health system pharmacy executives.
It included research into the demography, role, training, supply
and competencies of pharmacy executives. ASHP and the Foundation
are implementing the planned center. Filerman
State Policies to Inform Consumers about Long-Term
Care Insurance
The project was a case study of consumer
protections and sources of consumer information about long-term
care insurance in six states. The study included
a review of the literature about long-term care insurance decision
making, a web-based review of information in each state, a survey
of all State Health Insurance Information Programs, and interviews
with long-term care insurance agents. Friedland
