Dr.
Gary Filerman, department chair of Health Studies, opened the
conference with a few enlightening words about the purpose
and value of research. A highlight for many in attendance
at the conference was the faculty panel held on Friday afternoon. Featuring
Dr. Charles H. Evans, health sciences; Dr. Gary Filerman,
health systems; Dr. Michael Relf, nursing; and Dr. Bernhard
Liese, international health; the panel was a thorough review
of research possibilities in each discipline. The opening
day of the conference concluded with student poster presentations. Ten
NHS students presented their unique and remarkable research
by way of colorful graphs and eye-catching charts.
| The
events on Saturday also proved to be highly successful. The
new on-line NHS Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
was presented for the first time by a group of Health Studies
science seniors who had toiled over the project as
part of the senior science seminar during the 2002-3 academic
year. Following the journal roll-out two PowerPoint
presentations were given by Elisa Thorner, NHS ’03,
and Julie Richards, NHS ’04 of their research projects. Sheila
Sahni, a current sophomore and member of the research committee,
stated that these students’ presentations ignited her
passion for research. |

Nine
enthusiastic and committed NHS students pooled their individual
efforts for the success of the first annual research conference. The
students were slightly disappointed with attendance numbers,
but advisors Jason Murray, NHS Asst.Dean for Stduent Academic
Affairs, and Charles Evans, Chair of the NHS Human Science Department,
were pleased with the overall outcome of the conference. Planning
for this year’s conference will be started early during
the Fall 2003 semester to ensure a marvelously successful second
conference during the Spring of 2004.
| The
keynote speaker, Dr. Thomas Zeffiro, Scientific Director
of Georgetown University’s Center for the Study of
zlearning closed the conference with a keynoite address
covering the role of brain development in learning disorders. Dr.
Zeffiro, whose laboratory is located in the Georgetown
University Medical Center, followed his presentation with
a tour of the Neuroimaging Suite and new MRI instrument. |
