"The new microscope is a powerful addition to
the core shared use instruments in the research laboratory," said Charles Evans,
Jr., M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Human Science. "It
extends the ability of Human Science faculty and NHS students to
look on the surface of and within individual cells at hormone and
other receptors, enzymes, and even movement of molecules such as
calcium into and within the cell during investigation of the processes
of cell growth, division, and cell death."
The images can be converted into digital data that can be analyzed
in a variety of ways using software programs both during the actual
visualization of the cell or later from the digital data that has
been transferred and stored in a computer in the Discovery Center,
Evans noted.
The Zeiss microscope can detect 4 different fluorescent wavelengths
(UV, GFP, Cy-3, and Cy-5). It comes with Apotome, which enables the
microscope to scan in the Z plane, allowing for 3-dimensional image
rendering. It can be expanded for live cell imaging.
