Nursing Education

Enhancing Educational Development

students in classroomGraduate study in nursing education prepares the professional student to be a nurse educator in a variety of settings including higher education, vocational education, staff development, and patient education. Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies prepares future leaders to respond to the growing complexity of health care delivery at all levels by preparing educators who will develop and teach in programs for healthcare professionals and programs of health education for consumers.

Grounded in theoretical perspectives of nursing and education, graduates are prepared for advanced roles related to nursing education, educational research and educational policy and decision-making. This track of study addresses the goal of improving nursing and healthcare through the professional development of educators at all levels while incorporating the role of research into the development of excellence in nursing education.

The master’s program consists of 35 credits and can be completed in one calendar year of full time study. The graduate core courses encompass interdisciplinary nursing and science requirements that provide content essential to nurse educators. The nursing education courses expand and extend knowledge gained in the core, and provide an opportunity for students to confront important issues in education and develop skills as educators.

A part-time sequence is also available for the working professional who continues to grow in the clinical laboratory. The part-time options can be customized to meet the individual needs and goals of the nursing education student. In addition there is an opportunity to complete a certificate program consisting of the four major education courses, 14 credits total. Students can complete this program in three semesters of study.

Scholarship is accentuated during the program with an emphasis on evidence-based practice in education as demonstrated by the culmination of course work with a scholarly project or thesis option. The students will also demonstrate rigor in the clinical environment with teaching in a variety of settings.

At the conclusion of the program or certificate, graduates will be eligible for examination for the Nursing Professional Development Board Certification offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Corporation as well as the Certified Nurse Educator credential offered by the National League for Nursing.
