Nurse-Midwifery Leadership in Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Scholarship
In addition to preparing excellent clinicians for the practice of
midwifery, the Nurse-Midwifery Project's Maternal and Child Health
Leadership Scholarship offers selected nurse-midwifery students the
opportunity to participate in additional seminars, workshops and
courses on topics of leadership, health policy, and public health
issues in maternal and child health (MCH).
The
Nurse-Midwifery Leadership in Maternal and Child Health Project
provides vital training in key leadership skills that will
allow graduates of the Georgetown University Nurse-Midwifery Program
to assume leadership positions in efforts to correct the inequities
in the U.S. health care systems that result in disparities in MCH
services and outcomes.
In addition to
obtaining an excellent clinical education that includes an enhanced
cultural competence component,
nurse-midwifery students who are leadership trainees will participate
in research projects that are designed to identify and reduce health
disparities, will participate in public health/ policy practicum
experiences in the Washington metropolitan area, and will participate
in seminars, workshops, and courses on leadership, health policy,
and current issues in MCH.
This Project offers to select nurse-midwifery students attending the
Georgetown graduate program on a full-time basis a 50% tuition
scholarship for the four semesters of the program and a
one-time $1000 stipend to help cover the costs of both their
basic midwifery education and the additional MCH Leadership courses.
The mission of this scholarship program is to produce nurse-midwives
who:
-
Demonstrate leadership in their field;
-
Provide excellent clinical services to underserved populations
of women and their families; and
-
Understand and work to correct the inequities in the
US health care system that result in disparities in maternal
and child health (MCH) services and outcomes.
In
addition to the clinical component of the core midwifery program,
students engage in the following special activities:
LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
Each semester the Leadership students participate in a Leadership
Seminar taught by the project director. The seminar covers
theories of leadership and an overview of issues in maternal
and child health disparities, as well as content and experiential,
self-reflective learning practice in communication and listening
skills, in leading and managing change, in motivating people,
grant writing, legislative, lobbying and advocacy processes,
and social justice issues in health care access and outcomes.
 ON-SITE
PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE
The learning objectives of the practicum include:
- Gather and analyze information about problems relevant
to MCH populations;
- Develop an understanding of the ways that knowledge,
social strategies and political will combine to create
public health policy;
- Develop beginning skills in program evaluation, RFP or
grant writing, community health education, or policy analysis;
and
